As a slave girl, Maya had to earn her "privileges" by meeting the conditions her captors had imposed - in this instance, Maya was only allowed a specific number of breaths per minute. Her body function privileges would not be returned to her until she could "breathe gracefully." Now, all that occupied her mind was her breathing rhythms.
Maya was tired, hungry, and thirsty. It's been days since the men fed her, gave her water, or extracted any urine from her bladder. She's been kept standing on her toes since her arrival. She begged the men to let her at least kneel for just a few seconds – the men brutally pinched her nipples instead to shut her up. Only after Maya has learned to breathe precisely only twice per minute would the men allow her to eat. and sleep once again.
Perhaps the men would eventually consider extracting a small amount of piss from Maya's very bloated bladder, if they were in the mood.
